I. Accessibility Alternatives

Designing an interactive experience heavily reliant on audiovisual distortion and sensory overload poses significant accessibility challenges. Drawing from the PERMA model of positive psychology and transformative game design, the following alternatives ensure the experience remains playable and emotionally resonant without compromising the phenomenological depth or causing genuine harm to the player12.

  • Audio Alterations (Hyperreflexivity/Voices): For players with auditory processing issues or those prone to severe sensory overload, the spatialized, whispering "voices" can be toggled to a "Visual Echo" mode. Instead of overlapping audio tracks, the character's intrusive thoughts manifest as kinetic typography in the environment, fading in and out of the textures on the walls, allowing for cognitive engagement without acoustic overwhelm.
  • Visual Distortions (Derealization/FOV shifts): For players susceptible to motion sickness or vertigo, extreme FOV shifts and non-Euclidean geometry warping can be replaced by a "Texture Decay" setting. The 3D geometry remains stable and navigable, but the materials become noticeably synthetic, desaturated, and flat to simulate the loss of reality grip and diminished self-affection without inducing physical nausea17.

J. Scene Rewrites: From Generic Horror to Phenomenological Reality

Scene A: The Hallway Encounter

  • Before (Generic Supernatural Horror): The character walks down a dark, grimy hallway. The lights flicker and die. A grotesque monster with long claws jumps out of a locker. A loud jump-scare musical chord plays. The character must draw a weapon and shoot the monster to proceed.
  • After (Phenomenological Design \- Boundary Loss & Ipseity): The character walks down a brightly lit, overly sterile hallway. As ipseity disturbance peaks, the character's sense of bodily boundaries dissolves29. The player’s controller inputs become slightly sluggish, simulating the loss of minimal self. The shadows cast by the character’s own body begin to desynchronize from their movements. The character's own breathing sounds as if it is coming from behind them, an externalized bodily experience7. The "monster" is not a creature, but the character's own shadow, which has fully detached and is now mirroring the player's movements with a one-second delay, physically blocking the exit. The player must stop moving, sheathe any items, and utilize a specific breathing mechanic to center the minimal self, waiting patiently for the shadow to re-tether to their avatar before they can walk forward.

Scene B: The Locked Door

  • Before (Generic Supernatural Horror): The character needs a key to open a heavy door. A translucent ghost appears, points a skeletal finger to a bloody sigil painted on the wall, and disappears. The key is conveniently hidden behind a loose brick directly under the sigil.
  • After (Phenomenological Design \- Aberrant Salience & Double Bookkeeping): The character needs a physical keycard. The room is a cluttered, messy office. Due to a spike in aberrant salience, a completely irrelevant object—a ticking desk fan—commands the camera's attention, glowing with intense post-processing and drowning out all other audio23. The character's internal, spatialized voices scream that the fan is a surveillance device that must be destroyed immediately. The player is forced into a double bookkeeping scenario3: they can choose to smash the fan to quiet the agonizing audio and reduce the visual noise (appeasing the demands of the private reality), but doing so creates an objective loud noise that alerts the facility guards in the shared reality. The actual keycard is sitting, unlit and mundane, on a chair in the corner of the room. The true puzzle is one of attention management, cognitive filtering, and impulse control, requiring the player to navigate the gap between what the environment screams is important and what is objectively required to survive.
